How I Learned To Stop Letting Others Tell Me What To Do

And that was a huge realization for me.

It took years for me to come to terms with being a self-made man and how I could achieve success with my own two hands. While these days I could go to a coffee shop and talk with some smart people without it affecting my day-to-day life at all, it was something I was still working through. This is why I’m so glad that this podcast helped me realize how much I could do for myself, myself.

The problem we face in our generation is that we believe that the world owes us a living, something no other generation expected to have, and the truth is that no one owes you a living. It’s yours, mine, or neither. This is what my grandfather used to say, so I took it to heart. I realized this is actually the opposite of a life that pays you back. It’s actually a life that can take and take from you. I never thought it would hit me this hard that I shouldn’t expect to get anything for my hard work, or any kind of success at all. This is not how we are set up to live, and if there’s anything that I learned working on this show, it sure doesn’t apply to how I grew up.

I realized that I was being a loser because I was doing so little, and the way we’re set up to make money is with a massive debt that comes due and you can’t pay it off. This is actually more of that debt that comes due, which is why our society is doomed, I think. No one is ever going to be rich, because no one in their right mind ever has the resources to ever get richer. I mean, the only reason I could afford to be a professional athlete was because of my father’s financial resources and his connection, and he is definitely not wealthy.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying my mother made me the millionaire that I am today, but I’m glad I was able to come up with the means for me to live the life I love with the people that I love. I really don’t think it’s all that simple, though I think it’s a lot of work and dedication to get where I am now.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately, and it was one of the driving points that I wanted to bring up on the podcast today, because I think it’s so easy to lose sight of how much can be done with so little and even that we can take for granted. I mean look, I’m not the only one who took a break from my full-time job to pursue a dream like this and become successful. That’s what really drives me, isn’t it? I’d love to hear that, but people have to know that. I think that the podcast has helped me get my bearings with this idea and get my own ideas about what I can do as well.

I have a friend in London who works at McDonalds. For this friend, this is the only way she can earn a living. She can only make a few hundred pounds a week doing her job and not take home anything. I think for a lot of you in this room that are struggling to make rent or making less than what people make off of their home mortgage, you realize that no matter how much you put into training, no matter how much you work out, you, too, can’t earn enough money to live the way you want to live.

I don’t think this is to say that we are all doomed and can’t ever do whatever we want to do.
