How I Made The Most Of Those Months Without A Tv

It was the end of summer, it was a new year and it was a perfect day. I had time to rest and do myself a favor and turn off TV for several months. What happened? Oh, I’ll tell you: I stopped drinking, and I was happier than I ever have been in my 22 years.

I often get asked by students what I do in my spare time to make time for reflection or meditation. I think that when we really do understand that time is an illusion, that it is not finite and if not used properly can lead only to despair … time is our most precious asset. We are limited only by our ability to perceive time; we are not limited by any of the other senses that we have. The ability to understand that it is a mind-body phenomenon that creates the illusion of space and time makes it so much easier to understand time and to use that time more wisely. It doesn’t have to be like this. We can use time to create a space of calm, a time to create calm in our lives. It is easier in some ways than other ways, but time is our most precious asset. You don’t have to change anything in your life. You don’t have to change anything in your life. You have the control and you really have to understand and use the time you have. Do the things that make you feel good. Be kind to yourself if you need to be.

What does it mean to be kind to yourself? What does it mean to be kind to yourself? Sometimes it is not necessary to “feel good” all the time; sometimes the things that make you feel good are enough for you, as long as they are things that you enjoy doing. You don’t have to have things every moment of the day. You can still enjoy your time with your family, friends, work, books, films, nature, art, exercise, whatever. This is your time to heal, a good time to take your meditative breath, a peaceful time to sit or stand still and enjoy the sounds and the sights around you.

Just be aware of your thoughts.

Just be aware of your thoughts. You can’t force yourself not to think in the moment. You are allowed to be anxious, to worry about work or your loved ones, to feel anger and sadness or fear. Sometimes it is helpful to let it all go and not think in these situations. When you think about something that you really want to go to the movies by, that you have been waiting years for, and you suddenly don’t, you still have other plans. You are not going to the movies because of a bad day. You have other plans.

Time is precious, time has value, time is something you can’t lose. When we lose time we lose time. It is something to be concerned with, yet I think that it is very difficult to understand time when it is not used.

I love this quote from the Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh: “If you don’t use time efficiently, you lose it, and we have all lost the precious resource we can get our hands on at any second. To lose time, and you must always remind yourself that when you lose time there are places to lose time. So I have to remind myself that I have the time at my disposal to do this, I’ve got it, you got it, you got it …”

Time doesn’t have to be limited to the way we perceive it. I still have plenty of time at the end of each day so that I do not lose the beautiful time I have. Life is much longer than we know it to be in our present moment, and time is very precious and so is every moment that we experience, and it is our most precious asset. I miss you, dear friends. Thank you for sharing in all of this with me. You gave me so much pleasure. We have all enjoyed each other’s company. All of you were really great friends. Thank you for everything.

Thank you, thank you all.
