How To Avoid Cement Powder Burned Wood

The most common problem with wood-stoves. When you heat/cool the chimney, it acts like a fan to blow out the powder that’s trapped inside the wood.

If you’ve lived in a wood stove for very long, then you probably know about the powder burnt wood problem. This is the result of the wood-chimney chimney venting the smoke right into your living room floor. This is really bad for you in the long run. This time-saving fix comes with a little bit of work. If your wood chimney isn’t leaking, then you don’t need to do anything.

If your chimney just got leaking, you should first locate the source of the problem, such as a defective chimney stem, cracked or damaged wood and old paint. Then you can start to clean the chimney.

First, cut a line about a foot across using a hack saw. The line must be thick enough that the smoke won’t escape into your wood flooring. This line allows some of the smoke to escape to drain away.

The more expensive and stronger the wood chimney stem, the more it should come down. This requires a power drill to be used, and that will be covered later.

After the chimney stem is in place, you can replace it. It usually looks similar to the picture below. You’ll have to replace the gasket that goes over the holes in the bottom of the stem. The gasket may need to be replaced a couple times. You can also replace the stem if you have cracked or damaged wooden stem.

After the chimney stem is done, you can place the stem inside of the chimney and then plug in. You can now fire up that wood stove with the chimney removed.

If your wood stove is leaking through the chimney, then you only need to replace the chimney for one of the stem holes. If you have multiple holes on your stem, use a jig saw with the gasket intact. Drill a couple of larger holes and insert your new chimney stem. You should plug in and fire up your fire!
