How To Be More Like Jesus For Lent

Jesus would never say that it’s not good to keep your eye on things, but he made it pretty clear that the more immediate is an eye for things, the more things you should see and the more they change the world. So here’s why you ought to consider taking the leap.

Lent is an opportunity to become that Jesus that God created; that’s why the Church has Lent. It is an opportunity to become that Jesus that can transform the world by changing your heart. You can’t do it from afar either. You have to be in the midst of it in real time. Lent doesn’t just begin when you’re actually celebrating the Easter Festival, but extends right up to the last day of April so that you spend your whole life on this one mission. Why Do We Need Fasting? Lent gives us a very profound and deep experience of that Jesus. There are so many ways to say that but we all know a fasting Jesus. What Jesus did on Passover wasn’t just make me stop chewing gum (that was easy), that was what changed my life for good. In fact, it was that day that Jesus gave up everything to devote himself to me because I needed his love more than I needed anything else. What You Do When You’re Not Fasting:

When I hear anyone suggest that one can do without fasting this Lent, I get a little uneasy. I wonder how they can get away with it? You see, I have to say that there are times when it looks a bit silly to not go to church for a long period of time each Sunday, when most of us would probably be fine with something like a morning walk, a late dinner, a little exercise, a couple of late morning meals, and so on. Some folks go without food as a test on others. I suppose that a person who is fasting might not eat meat for a day, but not for ten days.

I know that my dear friends who are Lenten observant would find it even sillier to not eat meat for a day or two. It’s easy for some folks to say that they won’t eat food. They might be hungry, say, after they watch an episode of Glee, and they don’t want to make food for others. You say that you don’t like to eat meat, and maybe you don’t, and if you can eat a little meat, you must be hungry. But what if that’s as far as you go? You need meat, you need it badly. That’s how I would interpret it. But for Lent you don’t need meat at all, you just do things that give you the opportunity to really feel the love of Jesus, that give you a real taste of what it means to be that Jesus that God has made . And we are that Jesus created.

How does it feel to be that Jesus? What does fasting mean to you, whether you call it self-denial or fasting, spiritual discipline, whatever you want to call it.

It means that you get to take a few weeks off. The whole point of going to church is to spend a whole week there that you really get into the Spirit. What is going to happen to you if you do this Lent? Does it make you a different person? Are you better-behaved, is there less swearing in the house, are you less likely to be out drinking, are you less likely to be out drinking?

It’s a spiritual test.
