How To Clean Glass Using Liquid Dishwashing Detergent

To clean glass, simply put your glass on the microwave or stovetop with water and dish washing detergent and let it sit for a minute or two to allow the detergent to work.

When our old kitchen started going through renovations, we bought a new kitchen. It’s a beautiful place now, but when we unpacked there were some big changes, and they brought with them a few scratches, cracks and other imperfections. The first thing that came to mind was something being stored on top of the dishwasher that needed to be cleaned. We weren’t confident we could just run out and buy this stuff to do it, so we took a different approach—using dishwashing liquid.

Our first trial was with some liquid dishwashing liquid that was made for household liquids. But the solution we came up with worked out well enough to make some minor repairs. After that we learned just how thin the liquid really is. If you don’t have an expensive vacuum pump system (like ours), you can use a gallon jug of liquid dish soap and water to remove the dirt. I can’t tell you how often I’ve had someone tell me that they ran out of clean dishwashing liquid, and it makes me a little sad to say it, but it really is that easy once you get into it.

The easiest way to clean Glass is to simply dip it in the detergent solution, clean it off and let it sit for five minutes. After five minutes it is so clean you can even scrape it clean with a finger nail. This is good for a little bit of cleaning, but it will need to be rinsed off with a clean cloth and then dried before replacing. This is the easiest method, and it also doesn’t require much attention, unlike some other techniques.

If you don’t have a vacuum pump system, you should consider one. Vacuums are so quick and easy to use, but when I got to the dishwasher my vacuum stopped working properly, and I wasn’t able to use it. While I waited for my vacuum to become fixed, I took the dishwasher inside to get an idea of how to clean it. After some poking I found that with a little elbow grease and a couple of ounces of dishwashing liquid, I was able to clean the dishwasher, just as I could in our old kitchen.

You don’t even need to dry the dishwashing detergent off. Simply wash your hand in the detergent solution and let it do the work. Some folks say to dry it out with an ordinary towel, but we’ve found the dishwashing solution will dry more evenly if the detergent solution is on your hand. I found after using a couple of bottles in our dirty dishes, just a little bit of dishwashing liquid did the trick.

When you’re done with the dish washing detergent, just wash your hand in the cleaning solution to remove any residue that may be stuck to your skin. It’s best not to wash directly with the detergent solution, but if you do have to use it, it is a good idea to rinse with water after cleaning. Then, dry your hand with a clean towel until you feel it needs a little more soap to dry it out completely before you hang it up.

Once you have cleaned out the dishwashing liquid, let it sit for five minutes and then wash it down with your normal dishwashing detergent. The cleaning solution will make the dirty dishes much harder to clean (which is great!) without a vacuum. We’ve used the dishes in our new kitchen with clean dishes for a few weeks with no problems, and so far we are pleased.
