How To Create An Awesome Blackboard Cover

If you live in that basement or attic that seems to be a magnet for all sorts of weird and wonderful junk. It could be a beautiful blackboard cover that will work perfectly, but is just so… black.

It doesn’t have to be an unattainable, expensive thing. We found a solution for a very functional blackboard cover that’ll give your walls a stylish update. We used a white wood-grain board from Home Depot, white paint, two coats of interior floor stain and a matte black spray-on gloss finish.

You probably knew this was coming, but don’t worry, it’s pretty simple and you can do it right in the living room!

Step 1: Lay out your board The boards are 2 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. So, lay it out exactly as you would for a regular blackboard, like you would do if you were going to cut the board for a piece of furniture, but leave plenty of space for the tape. Then, tape the blackboard to the wall behind it. The black will be on all four sides but just have a little gap for the tape.

Step 2: Decide if you want the cover to be a single surface or two.    Decided If you decide to go with two surfaces, simply cut the top piece off and then cut another piece of the board to be used as a liner.  For example, this part:  To make this part, cut your piece off and then just cut a piece a half of a second longer than the top board piece to get an additional liner. This way, when you stick the liner piece to the top board, it goes to a nice center.

Step 3: Decide on the length of your liner. If you decided on a two-sided board, cut two pieces of liner board to the size of your board. We used two 12- by-18-inch pieces – 1 piece of linen, 1 piece of black leather. Next, cut a piece of liner about 18- by 24 inches. This is the one that goes on top of the blackboard. Once you’re done for this part, cut the liner on all four of the sides, so your board looks like this:

Step 4: Install the liner Next, place the liner board on top of the board. We put an extra piece of liner over each corner and up top on the second piece of liner (see the second photo above).

Step 5: Let the liner dry for a couple hours You should get an almost-ready-for-taping-over look. The bottom of the liner should be a little bit wet and your board should look like this when you’ve gotten all the way to the top:

That was easy!

How to Create An Awesome Blackboard Cover You can buy or make your own blackboard covers; you can also build one if you don’t have that piece laying around. One of the benefits is that some DIY blackboard covers don’t require paint and will give you a great look because the board is black.
