How To Start A New Career From Nothing

The story is quite fascinating, and well worth a read for those who know nothing about how the Internet works. I am still amazed how so many people have started their own successful companies. And, it doesn’t hurt that they make it look easy. Check this one out.

Today I found myself a “freelancer.” I got an email saying “Just want to give you a quick heads up. I have a job opening for you to fill (as a freelancer). Email me back immediately.” So I did. Turns out they were looking for a full-time writer at one of our smaller, local agencies. So here I am. I was offered a spot on a one-day assignment — basically a one-page description. In a few weeks I would get the chance to pitch the idea of being a full-time writer — in fact, I got the chance to write an entire script on that one date. What did I take for granted? The idea that I could do something for a living, get paid for it, and get it done on a consistent basis. But, it was also a chance to learn. I would have to sell my scripts and pitch to whoever takes the time. And, more importantly, I would get to meet some of the best and brightest writers in the industry. I got a couple of emails about this and got to meet a couple of the writers myself. It didn’t sound like too much work at all and was a lot more fun than I had anticipated. I ended up landing the gig I was looking for, and then some.

So this is what I mean when I say you should never give up unless it’s completely hopeless. This is what I mean by “a lesson learned.”

When it got to the pitch, I got a couple of emails back from the agents, and then about five minutes later, out came my pitch. And they laughed. And then they were like “Yeah, I can see the possibilities.” So, yeah, it’s all fun and games but it’s not as fun as we all thought it was going to be. But, you know me, I get it.

The next day I got an email from the agent (not sure who he was) saying “Look! I’m doing this for real. I’ve got two scripts that I really want to make into movies, and now that you’re doing it, you’re the only person who can make that happen. So, I really need your help. There’s something pretty crazy, but I’ll be honest. To get in the mix you have to give us a good script idea. Do you want to be a producer or writer?” So I wrote him another “Pitch” email and sent him the first one.

He didn’t reply but I kept on sending him scripts and sending him scripts and emailing him and telling him what kind of scripts I wanted to make. Then, he told me, “You can start working with me from now on!” I felt like a total moron for three days but then, I was actually kind of glad I had him back. He made it feel like we had this real chance. Even though he kept telling me it was a crazy idea, it had a certain “oomph” to it. So, I gave it my best shot and got back a response a few days later.

And that’s where we are now. So there was a little bit of work involved, but I ended up on a great project and will definitely be a regular on the web site soon. So, that’s something I learnt from this job and how you can make a real impact in your small writing community.
