Most of us think we know how to eat to make the best of our bodies (and our lives, actually), but we don’t know the tricks that really keep our bodies healthy. And, as a result, we keep thinking our bodies are on a break. It’s all true, of course. But, so-called ‘sneaky eating’ can actually be the key to a fuller life. How Your Body Fights Against Your Health The things you eat each day create the chemical environment in your body. And your diet — and the food you choose, or don’t choose — can be the best or the worst thing that ever has been or is going to be in it. We all like to think we can be healthy, at least on a good day , but many of us can get so focused on weight loss that we overlook many other things. When it comes to health, not everything we eat is the same. For instance, if you eat tons of processed foods and don’t eat a lot more organic food or whole foods, you’re pretty much going to lose weight for the rest of your life. But if you make healthier food choices, you can keep getting younger! In other words, eating is just one part of our overall diet. And, on balance, some things we eat and some things we don’t are far more important to get right than anything else. We also need to pay attention to what they do to our health. If they are things that make weight loss more or less likely or more or less effective, the chances are good of a long and healthy life. How To Know What Your Body’s Saying: Our body chemistry says so much about who we are and who we could always be. In particular, our chemical response to fat and protein is incredibly important: The “fight or flight” response (also called “the hunger hormone”) is used by everything from your immune system to your brain to regulate the amount of calories your body needs to survive. Fats are a source of energy. And when you eat fats, the body sends out a surge of hormones — including the hunger and feeling of full hormones — that trigger your body to dig and burn as many calories as it can. But if fats are eaten too often, or on too many empty calories, the body can become resistant to them, and our “fight or flight” hormones start to say “no thanks, you’re full.” For this reason, it is critical to choose foods with at least 10 percent healthy fats, 30 to 35 percent of your daily calories coming from protein. It’s the food you eat that determines your food “reward.” The food you eat will influence the food you’re going to eat, and how much your weight and health changes.

How To Eat Right For Your Body Some health tips that will help you make healthy choices: Keep calories in check: Eat healthy foods that contain a diverse variety of foods — no single food should make up more than 25 percent of your daily calories. That way, you’ll find plenty of choices and have plenty of variety. Eat plenty of complex carbohydrates, which are slow to be digested in the body and help to fill you up.

Don’t get fat: Eating too many calories from processed junk foods can be harmful, and fat is an easy thing to give in to. The average American diet (even if it contains plenty of healthy fat sources) should contain at least 35 percent healthy fat (15 grams of unsaturated oil, and about 8 grams of fiber). If you have high blood pressure, consider limiting consumption of sugar and artificially sweetened products.
