Why Most People Don’t Work Hard Anyhow

Many people don’t work hard. They feel too lazy. They feel too busy, too “having too many obligations.” They have so much going on–their family, their career, their friends. People feel trapped. If they don’t take action they feel they can’t do anything.  They don’t see their own power.

Many people don’t work hard. They feel too lazy. They feel too busy, too “having too many responsibilities.” They have so much going on–their family, their career, their friends. People feel trapped. If they don’t take action they feel they can’t do anything.  They don’t see their own power. The problem is, that’s when motivation and productivity can be the easiest. That’s when it’s easy to skip a few nights of sleep, a few extra hours and a few extra sessions of physical exercise. When you’re just looking to “spice up your day” and feel a little less stressed or tired–well, that’s when you’re more vulnerable to poor health. That’s when you could miss an opportunity to make lasting changes. So, how do you know when to start doing something new and when to give in and go with the flow? And when to take a break? This is a great question, but it’s also the problem with most of the work we do at Wellness.

This is a great question, but it’s also the problem with most of the work we do at Wellness.  We don’t have a clear picture of how long to hold people accountable for progress. How can you tell if someone is actually making improvements when it feels so hard to measure the changes they’ve made?

We don’t have a clear picture of how long to hold people accountable for progress.  How can you tell if someone is actually making improvements when it feels so hard to measure the changes they’ve made?  No one is really watching your productivity like other businesses do. For a long time we’ve told people that if they work hard, keep an eye on the clock, and track their energy, they’ll quickly make a good living and keep their families healthy and content. (By the way, we don’t tell people how busy to be to make this work well. You can be busy and still lose it or be overworked and still fail with your health.) This sounds like a good place to start with this idea. But then you need to know how long it takes to make those changes. (If you don’t actually know that, how would you figure it out?). As you’ll see, there are many cases where we’ve had to push the bar very low to find the workable solutions.

When to let people go

When you’re a business person, you try not to make any mistakes. You try to make every decision to maximize revenues, not profitability. You keep your focus on the number one goal, the bottom line. “We only focus on our top priorities”  might sound good if your goal is to maximize dollars or sales, but it’s a terrible idea when it comes to health. Every decision must be about health improvements, but in some cases the numbers still can’t be seen straight.

This isn’t just a matter of accounting. Sometimes we don’t see the health benefits of new products from competitors.  Sometimes we make decisions in a manner that’s not productive for our health.  There’s really no way to know the health benefits and consequences of all our business actions, not unless we have a “big data” system and a dedicated department that uses the numbers to make decisions.

And even if you had enough information on how long it takes to help people make the changes they need to make, how could you know if it was time to stop?  Sometimes people just don’t act. Sometimes they feel so strongly about what they want to do, they are willing to go through a lot of difficulty and pain for it. Sometimes they believe it will help, or that it will make other people think less of them or their businesses when it doesn’t help. Sometimes their health issues can become so bad that it’s too difficult or risky to take action. You will not be able to tell how long they should be held accountable for that.

The problem is, when you focus on the results, you can’t see the steps that are taken that might help someone get to a result. You won’t believe you need to change any of the behaviors because you’re still not certain on how your results will turn out.
