Why Your Life Is A Story

You are not just a collection of symptoms, with symptoms just the surface of a complex entity. It is just as much a story – the story of your life. Every part, every detail, every emotion and every belief is a crucial piece of the picture.

All is not lost, for you can find joy in the things YOU were meant to be doing, and to be, all along. A good example: I’m in a long-term relationship. I’m not looking to have a child. In our early twenties, I knew from a very young age that this was not the path I would walk. I chose instead to pursue something else, because life is so short! If I had followed the path of children, my life would have been shorter as well. I’ve also found my passion in art, and now I’m able to provide the financial support my passions require to be achieved.

I’m now in my fourth year of graduate school and I’m so happy. I’ve started dating a guy from the university I’m attending, and our lives now have a greater sense of purpose and direction. There is no doubt in my mind that I have fulfilled my lifelong purpose – the one that has shaped much of what I believe about myself. I’m no longer fighting my past, but instead embracing the love that has been waiting for me all along.

There is joy in things we do or are. Just as the pain we experience is part of our lives, so too are the good times. There’s no shortage of joy to be had in life, no matter what you choose to do.

I am not going to sit here and tell you that you have no pain – or only one kind. There’s pain that is not about trying to get something for yourself, like a promotion or a good job and there’s pain that goes with it; the pain when someone’s heart breaks, or the pain of having feelings, like jealousy, and the pain of having hurt and discarded others. The pain that goes with having a bad temper, or the pain of having a hard time at work, or the pain of loneliness and self-doubt. Each of us has pain, and it’s okay to admit it, no matter where you’re at in your life.

But there is also joy. There are good times in life, and there are fun times too. You want to be having fun? Just because your life may not be what you wanted it to be, doesn’t mean there are no joyful moments to be had!

What’s next?

Now that you will know what it is, go out and enjoy it! Don’t try to get something just because things are hard. You won’t know if you’re enjoying what you’re doing if you do. The answer is to enjoy what you’re actually doing, no matter what. Don’t complain about how you are feeling and what you need to do – there’s more than enough time to work on it. Instead, enjoy it. I know many people don’t want to admit that they’re not perfect – this is part of the problem, because it will prevent them from enjoying their life even more. But if you’re not happy, you will be unhappy. There’s no shame in it.

We are all born from some sort of pain, and our lives are stories about how we dealt with that pain in our lives. Do you know that? We choose the way we choose how to live our lives. How would you like to be known? What is your definition of happiness? There is the pain of the past, the pain of failure, the pain of sadness and grief, the pain of loneliness and fear of abandonment, the pain of living in a family that won’t accept you. How would you like to be known?

Life is the story of you learning to stand on an equal level with others and learn the ways to make the best out of what other people have given to you. Whether you’re single or dating, if you’re not enjoying and living your life, it’s time to consider what is missing.
